The Sacred Tree

This tree holds a special place in local tradition. According to local beliefs, it is inhabited by a spirit — a living connection between the visible and the invisible, between the living and the ancestors. Throughout the year, villagers come to leave offerings beneath its branches: chicken, pork, soft drinks, lao lao rice whisky, cigarettes, flowers or incense. Some come to make a wish, to ask for protection, guidance or healing. Others pray for their loved ones, their family, the year ahead. And others simply come to sit, to breathe, and let the silence do its work. Beneath its branches, something slows down. The air changes. The noise of the world fades.
